from Our Souls at Work

It seems that our current social service paradigm treats those in poverty as “have nots.”  So we focus our energy on giving – food, clothing, shelter, Bibles.  All of these are good and necessary, but insufficient as a holistic ministry.  I first encountered a Scripture that shattered the “have nots” paradigm for me when Spencer Brand exhorted us to read one Proverb every day.  I gave it a try that March.  During one such devotional, I was struck by Proverbs 13:23, “A poor man’s field may produce abundant food, but injustice sweeps it away.”"
