from Our Souls at Work

Talking with the very few people there, I heard stories that changed my life. One struck me deeply. They told me the people who came to work in my company at 22 - 23 years old, would circle a date on the calendar 35 years in the future when they could get out. My workplace was like a jail sentence.  It was a good workplace. But you don’t circle a time 35 years in the future to “get out” if you think the place is a fun place to work. It bothered me."

You have to free your subordinates to make decisions, but you also have to protect them from senior management. It’s difficult, but not impossible, to do from the position a “lower” position.
